SUMMARY:

The Team Leader has responsibility for the performance and organization of the project design for their specific discipline. Responsible for the successful delivery of each individual design deliverable, managing of engineers and designers, developing project planning schedules, and producing the design documentation. Responsible for the personnel, financials, and overall success of the department.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Licensed PE.
  • 15+ years project engineering experience, from concept to opening in HVAC Design, Building Mechanical Systems, and Central Utility Plants.
  • Experience with healthcare, government, commercial, manufacturing, and/or education required.
  • Experience with architecturally significant buildings and designs.
  • Experience in leading or working in integrated teams.
  • Experience in financially projecting department revenue and overhead.
  • Experience with the local market and the associated business development.
  • Experience mentoring an engineering staff.
  • Knowledge and ability to review drawings for quality assurance, quality control.
  • Advanced knowledge in mechanical engineering, associated systems, calculations, and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of Deltek Vantagepoint, preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Department

  • Provides the technical direction of each project design.
  • Partners with the Project Managers and Project Architects to review project manpower estimates, project communications, budget monitoring and inputs, organizing deliverables, and setting project standards for delivery.
  • Develops typical details, specifications, and drawing standards, including development of Revit standards in coordination with the team.
  • Leads team meetings to help resolve project issues, coordination with other disciplines, schedule adherence, technical issues.
  • Provides technical support and project communications to team, as required.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry and technology changes and trends to recommend changes in approach and services, as appropriate.
  • Leads discipline specification development by incorporating standards, codes, product research, consulting with manufacturers, and evaluating and selecting project related materials.
  • Provides design inputs and reviews of other engineer’s projects to verify conformity to quality assurance, quality control, and best practice standards.
  • Performs/coordinates site visit surveys to determine engineering strategies and to document and evaluate existing systems.
  • Visits project sites during construction for quality, progress, and compliance review with specifications and standards.
  • Responsible for communication with other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to ensure incorporation of all information into project requirements and provides support as necessary.
  • Reviews project costs, budgets, and adherence to schedule for discipline.
  • Meets with municipal and other governing agency officials to coordinate variances.
  • Delivers quality and timely projects on budget.
  • Works on developing a positive relationship of trust with the team.
  • Mentors engineering staff.

 Technical Process Improvement

  • Identifies and implements ways to improve engineering design and design processes.
  • Guides the development of BIM/ Revit tools to improve productivity.
  • Improves analytic processes and documentation, common solutions, and critical solutions.
  • Coordinates and resolves technical issues.

Business Development

  • Participates in business development with team leaders.
  • Works with the Marketing department in preparing submittals and qualifications.
  • Promotes positive client contact with current and prospective clients and develop a relationship of trust.
  • Communicates with client representative to verify design requirements and specifications, progress reviews, and delivery of final presentation.
  • Provides support to Business Development, including write-up of key aspects of projects and presentations at industry events and prepare fee estimates and assumptions for potential projects.
  • Assists Marketing department in writing project descriptions to publicize Johnston’s projects.
